[materials] oyumaru molding material, part iii
I'm not even using the oyumaru right now, so I should probably title this entry something else. :D; Project sculpey head? Open to suggestions.

This is what the burned head looks like after some sanding and puttying and two coats of surfacer. It's kind of shiny, which makes me doubt it'll hold paint as well as the thinned basic putty, but I have yet to try a coat of acrylic. There are still a lot of imperfections (the oyumaru wasn't pushed well enough into the eyes to get the shape).

Left to right: original PVC head, second copy (unbaked), and first copy.

Here's what the first try looks like with hair and on an official body -- there were no modifications to the neck hole of that series 5 casual top. The sculpey fits snugly enough to be held upside-down and shaken around without falling off.

Maybe a little tiny bit more puttying around the chin and this'll be ready to paint!

The right side of the gray pinky face seems sort of faulty under the eye. Is that just the lighting? Because it looks okay in the other two photos.
And the putty you add... does it really turn out that smooth after sanding and surfacer? It's like additional add-ons without making it look clunky and stuck together. @__@ Like it was never there. I love the fact it came out so snug though, in the neck hole? I have original pinkies that have problems keeping their heads on! So this is promising.
*swoon*
I imagine you like, fine tuned the eyebrows, mouth, and other details with something after the surfacer/etc? Like a needle to reline the eyebrows...?

Yes, unfortunately. ; ; I did mention it was faulty around the bottom parts of the eyes because I didn't push the oyumaru hard enough onto the original head. I plan on redoing the mold 'cause of that -- otherwise, the copies will always need adjustment there.

The putty I added was Tamiya Putty Basic Type -- I think it's supposed to be like 500 grit surfacer? This is only my third or fourth time using it, but yeah! It does come out nice and smooth. For this one though, it took two rounds of puttying and sanding to get the surface looking decent.

The mouth and brows actually haven't been fiddled with since they were added using a needle tool thing before baking. There's a funky-looking dent on the right side of the mouth I wish I'd puttied though. XD;

On a side note about the loose necks, maybe something like Handi-tak would fix it? Just a little bit of that kneaded reusable adhesive stuff keeps resin hair pieces together for me. As for the sculpey head, it did start off a little too thick to fit, but it wasn't hard to cut down and sand to the proper size. I guess it's okay for the neck piece to be a little thicker at first, huh?

*long-winded* XD;
